    The Lens we Look Through

So last week was fairly busy at school, which left me little time to blog.  The job is going well, in the sense that I remain both busy and interested.  I have taken up the job of summarizing the Indonesian news when I get in to the office, first thing in the morning.

My favorite comment beneath a story about Obama in the Jakarta Globe last week expressed support for our President’s assertiveness in acting for the benefit of the poor by proclaiming him, “a leopard not a water buffalo.”  I’ve come to enjoy even the slightest uniqueness in perspective.

    The Last Time

Walking around the building at One Discovery Place was pretty say last Friday. It was my last time. I liked the building from the first time I walked in, but knowing this might be the last time I was able to wander around made me sad so I went up to the roof and enjoyed the view before I turned in my badge and caught the Metro home.

Its inevitable, the last day of an internship. I did everything right, made my supervisors proud, worked on lots of projects, met lots of people in the organization and did my best to make myself as indispensable as possible, but I just didn’t work out. There’s nothing wrong with that, I made the best of it!

What do you do when you don’t get the job you’ve been working an internship to get? Simple, get references!

Fear not, comrade! I was in the same boat as you but just found an awesome internship through Vault.com. It provides rankings, information and detailed reviews of various internships across the country. It’s generally free and reports a lot of different fields. I used it to find a humanities-related internship, but there are also options for everything from finance to architecture. It’s definitely worth checking out if you’re looking for another good experience!

Set Up Goals and Knock ‘Em Down

When starting an internship, it’s good to create some goals for yourself. Often, as is the case with my internship at Discovery, you’ll meet with your supervisor on your first day and you’ll come up with some goals, but if you don’t come up with your own personal goals.

My goals at Discovery News are:

    • Audit Discovery News’ social media platforms and make recommendations
    • Produce my news story from inception to post
    • Repurpose video for use on the new Discovery News website – i.e. learn a lot more about video editing
    • Learn news-gathering, writing and reporting for Discovery News works

This combines my own goals and the goals the News Director and I set out back in June, but I’d like to say, I accomplished them all. It feels good to post your own news story, and now something I’ll get to do much longer. My video editing has very much improved, and my Discovery News Social Media Audit was a great success resulting in a one hour conference call/Q&A with me about tactics and strategy for social media.

Goals are important. I can hear my Mom saying it in my head, “Set goals for yourself so you can push yourself to achieve them!” She wasn’t kidding. It really works.

    My First “Viral” Success

Working with Discovery for four weeks now, I’m really starting to settle in. I feel really good about the job and the people. I’m learning the layout of the building, the people who talk to each other and the people who prefer being left alone. But most importantly, I’m getting pretty good at my job. I look at this as a test for both me and for Discovery. What if I loved Discovery all throughout my childhood only to meet her and find out she was a raging alcoholic?! I would be crushed! What if Discovery looked at my resumé and thought, “Damn this kid know’s what he’s doing!” and then I arrived in flip-flops and a shirt with a bud light slogan on it without the faintest knowledge of how to use computer?

My point is last Friday, I passed the first test. I work with Discovery News. They are a science-focused news outlet run by Discovery and they have bloggers and videographers and traditional journalists all working together to create news product, and now they have me too.

Last week, I created a slideshow posted it on DiscoveryNews.com. It was a big moment to see my name on the finished product. For a while, it was on the homepage! As an intern, I felt I have arrived. Now, they trust me. They know my work and they know they can count on me to get stuff done. Next week they want me to work with them on their podcast too! I can’t wait!

Take Me Out to the Ball Game…

As I asked in the title of this post, for someone to please “take me out to the ball game”. Well I went to the ball game. I went to eleven ball games in 5 days as the Kentucky High School Athletic Association (KHSAA) hosted the 2010 State Baseball Tournament at Applebee’s Park in downtown Lexington, June 14th – 19th. As one of the tournament sponsors, iHigh was one of the official photographers of the games. So I got to spend almost 30 hours watching high school baseball…

    Discover(y) Trace

Good morning bloggers and bloggees! My name is Trace Dominguez. I am finishing up my master’s in Public Communication here at American and I’m a new blogger for the university’s Career Center (@AUCareerCenter). I wrote my capstone on YouTube’s interview with President Obama after the State of the Union. Originally from Michigan, I’ve not yet lived in DC a year, but I am excited to start working and living outside the AU library.

For the next few months I am interning at Discovery News (@Discovery_News) working with their Digital Media. Here on the AUIntern’s blog I’ll be writing about my experiences so you should probably just bookmark us now. Go ahead I’ll wait… Discovery News is a separate entity from the Discovery Channel you are familiar with. They’re both owned by Discovery Communications, however, so they’ve got similar goals. I’m not sure what my job duties will be yet, but I know I’ll be helping create, write and publish the stories you’ll see on their  iPhone app, Twitter account, Facebook page, RSS feed, and website! I’m sure I’ll be busy.  See you around!

    Sincerely,

    Trace
